Samsung’s Galaxy Gear Smartwatch Specs Revealed: 2.5-inch Display with Camera Integration and More

Samsung is planning to announce a Galaxy Gear smartwatch at its 4 September event right before IFA 2013. Everyone is willing to know ‘what’s inside the Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch?’, but nothing is clear besides a launch and shipping date. But not any more, Om Malik of GigaOm has revealed a closer look at the hardware and software details of the smartwatch.

According to the report, Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will have a square screen with high quality OLED displays that show full spectrum of colors. The screen is said to be around 2.5 inches diagonally (and 3 inches diagonally including the case). The watch screen will support the usual touch, swipe and select type gestures but will likely not have text-input. The Galaxy Gear smartwatch is expected to powered by Samsung Exynos 4212 dual core 1.5GHz processor with Mali-400 MP4 GPU and a 320 x 320 resolution display.

The smartwatch screen will sit on a strap, which is said to have a camera integrated into it  and tiny speakers in the clasp of the watch. In addition, there will be built-in NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 to connect with smartphones for connectivity. Assumedly the integrated camera will beam photos back to Galaxy smartphones.

According to Om Malik, there will be plenty of sensors — a built in accelerometer and sensors for fitness tracking are in the list.
On the software side of the watch, there will be very tight integration and syncing between the watch and the phones and tablets, which will all happen through a watch manager app Samsung plans to make available. The Galaxy Gear smartwatch will run on Android 4.1 (and in some cases Android 4.2), Twitter and Facebook integration will be found within.

It is very much clear that Samsung is all set to introduce a smartwatch on September 4. “We’ve been preparing the watch product for so long,” said Lee Young Hee, executive vice-president of Samsung’s mobile business. “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”

It is expected that Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will launch to the masses in early October, specifically in between 30 September – 6 October.
